There are many experts today that say you should only wash your hair a few times a week as opposed to the daily ritual we find ourselves in today, wash, rinse, condition, rinse and repeat daily. Brands love our dependency on their product so why would they offer us anything different? We will dive in to some alternative solutions later.
More people than ever are seeking an alternative, they want a “no poo” alternative to cleanse hair without the nasty chemicals, additives and natural oil stripping processes which we find ourselves needing to produce more oil and using conditioners further lining big businesses pockets at our expense.
Do a search and one will quickly see that the no poo movement is on the rise… and its sitting right in front of us all. No rinse, no lather and its chemical free at a fraction of the cost of store bought shampoo.
Many say that shampoo is like a drug, our hair and scalp need it once we have started using it however in truth, we don’t need it. Simply working in and rinsing hair with water, baking soda and apple cider vinegar solution for conditioner will clean your hair, make it shinier, keep you scalp in balance for its oil production, contribute to being green not to mention that it will save you money!
Don’t be fooled though, its not for everyone. There is a transition period that many people can not seem to make it through successfully, lets face it, its waaay easier to simply purchase a bottle of shampoo from your local grocery store than going no poo. The transition period varies from person to person depending on your genetic makeup and hormones. The first week is usually the toughest to overcome, you scalp may itch a bit, your hair might be oily and it might even look dried out on the ends. The Apple Cider Vinegar conditioner might put you off at first however this does rinse out (and so does the smell).
If you do make it through the transition period you will be rewarded for it with healthy, natural and full bodied hair, cutting your dependency on chemical solutions, freeing yourself and your budget!.
Here is a recipe that is successful:
Poo Poo Shampoo:
- 1 Table Spoon Baking Soda
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Spray Bottle
- Add both ingredients to the spray bottle for easy application in the shower/bath.
- Spray liberally to your hair, work it in down to your scalp (although you will not have the suds!) and rinse with water.
Poo Poo Conditioner:
- 1/2 cup Apple Cider
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Spray Bottle
- Add both ingredients to the spray bottle for easy application in the shower bath.
- Spray liberally into your hair, work it down to your scalp then let sit for approximately 2~3 minutes. If you have long hair, clip it out of your way while you do your other washing
That’s it! Its simple, easy, cheap, chemical free, environmentally friendly and you will be super surprised with the results when you make it through the transition period!
